Hogan MacPhail, a 17-year-old from Gateshead, was recently sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 17 years for the murder of his 15-year-old ex-girlfriend, Holly Newton, in Hexham, 

Northumberland. The attack, which took place in January 2023, followed Holly’s decision to end their relationship—a decision MacPhail reportedly struggled to accept. 

He had initially tried to visit Holly at her home in Haltwhistle the night before the murder, but was turned away. 

The next day, he traveled back to Hexham and, after following Holly around town, attacked her near a bus shelter, stabbing her 36 times. A teenage boy who attempted to intervene was also injured.


MacPhail was found guilty of murder after a trial in Newcastle Crown Court, during which he admitted to manslaughter but denied murder, claiming he had intended to use the knife on himself. 

The jury rejected this account, concluding that his actions were premeditated. Holly’s family has been vocal about classifying her death as domestic violence, given the controlling nature of the relationship, which included MacPhail manipulating her social media and making threats.

The judge recently lifted the reporting restrictions that had initially kept MacPhail’s identity confidential, citing the importance of public awareness in understanding the broader issues of knife crime and violence against young women.

China, however, denied this claim, asserting that their rocket components had safely re-entered Earth’s atmosphere.

Due to the uncertainty and multiple parties involved, the identity of the object remains contested. Yet, most experts believe it to be a derelict rocket booster left in orbit from an earlier lunar or high-altitude mission.

The Impact Site and Double Crater Formation 

The mysterious object crashed into the Moon’s far side, specifically in the Hertzsprung crater, an area not visible from Earth. 

This location choice made direct observations impossible. Fortunately, NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) was able to capture images of the aftermath, revealing an unusual crater formation: a double crater, roughly 65 feet across, with two overlapping craters instead of one.

This double-crater formation fueled further speculation. Unlike natural meteoroids or other space debris that typically form single, circular craters, the double crater implies an unusual structure of the colliding object. Scientists suspect that the object may have had two main masses—possibly fuel tanks or structural components that impacted the Moon at slightly different times, creating the distinctive crater shape.

What is a Supernova 

A supernova occurs when a star exhausts the nuclear fuel that powers it. This can happen in one of two ways: either the star is so massive that its own gravitational force causes it to collapse in on itself, or a smaller star accumulates mass from a nearby companion star until it reaches a critical point and detonates. The result is an explosion of immense energy, sending shockwaves and debris through space at astonishing speeds.

During a supernova, a single star can outshine an entire galaxy. The explosion releases light, heat, and radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum, allowing scientists to study the properties of distant stars and galaxies. Not only is this event awe-inspiring to observe, but it also plays a crucial role in the creation of elements.
