Dear 222 News viewers, sponsored by smileband,

In the early hours of April 9, 2025, a high-speed pursuit near Newcastle culminated in a significant collision involving five police vehicles and a BMW M Sport, resulting in injuries to seven officers.

Incident Details

The sequence began around 2:00 AM when Northumbria Police attempted to stop a dark grey BMW M Sport in Whickham due to concerns about its driving behavior. The vehicle failed to comply, leading to a pursuit that extended into Swalwell. At approximately 2:27 AM, on the northbound carriageway of the A1 near junction 75 and the Denton Burn roundabout, the BMW collided with five police vehicles—four marked and one unmarked. The impact was severe, causing substantial damage: one police car had its roof torn off, and the unmarked vehicle overturned onto its side.

Casualties and Arrests

Seven officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries. As of the latest reports, four have been discharged from the hospital, two remain under observation, and one is receiving treatment for a leg injury. The two occupants of the BMW, a man and a woman in their 20s, were uninjured. They have been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and aiding and abetting, respectively, and are currently in custody.

Traffic Disruptions

The collision prompted the closure of the A1 between junctions 73 and 75, leading to significant traffic congestion across Newcastle and Gateshead. Authorities, including National Highways and emergency services, responded promptly to manage the situation and initiate investigations.
