In the lead-up to Germany’s federal election on February 23, 2025, the nation has witnessed a surge in both anti and pro far-right protests, reflecting deep divisions within its society. The far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party has gained significant traction, with polls suggesting it could secure around 20% of the vote, positioning it as a formidable force in German politics.

This rise has ignited widespread demonstrations across the country. In Berlin, tens of thousands gathered at the Brandenburg Gate, voicing their opposition to the AfD’s anti-immigrant stance and expressing concerns over the party’s potential influence on Germany’s future. Similar protests erupted in cities like Munich, where over 200,000 people rallied against far-right extremism, highlighting a collective anxiety about the nation’s political direction.

Conversely, pro-AfD demonstrations have also taken place, with supporters advocating for stricter immigration policies and expressing dissatisfaction with the current government’s handling of economic and security issues. These rallies underscore a segment of the population that feels underrepresented and is drawn to the AfD’s nationalist rhetoric.

The political climate has been further complicated by international influences. Notably, figures like Elon Musk and U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance have publicly endorsed the AfD, urging Germans to reconsider their historical narratives and support the party.

Such endorsements have added fuel to the already intense debates surrounding national identity and Germany’s role on the global stage.

As the election approaches, the nation stands at a crossroads. The outcome will not only determine Germany’s domestic policies but also signal how it positions itself amidst rising populism and external pressures. The surge in both anti and pro far-right protests highlights the urgency and significance of this electoral decision, reflecting a society deeply engaged in shaping its future trajectory.
