Muhsin Hendricks, widely recognized as the world’s first openly gay imam, was fatally shot on February 15, 2025, near Gqeberha, South Africa. The 57-year-old cleric was ambushed while en route to officiate the weddings of two interfaith heterosexual couples. Two masked assailants blocked his vehicle and fired multiple shots, resulting in his death. The motive for the attack remains under investigation, with authorities exploring the possibility of a hate crime.  

Hendricks was a pioneering advocate for LGBTQ+ rights within the Muslim community. In 2011, he founded the Al-Ghurbaah mosque in Cape Town, providing a safe haven for LGBTQ+ and other marginalized Muslims. Despite facing threats and opposition from conservative religious groups, he remained steadfast in promoting inclusivity and acceptance.  

His untimely death has elicited widespread condemnation and mourning. The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) denounced the killing and called for a thorough investigation. The South African Human Rights Commission praised Hendricks’ efforts to challenge discrimination and promote human rights within religious contexts.
