Frankie Cluney, a 32-year-old artist from Brighton, England, has become known as a real-life Rapunzel due to her extraordinary hair, which measures six feet in length. Remarkably, she hasn’t washed her hair in over 20 years.

Frankie’s journey began at the age of six when she was captivated by images of women with long, flowing hair in her mother’s art books. This fascination inspired her to grow her own hair long. By the time she was 13, her hair reached her waist. She found washing it cumbersome and time-consuming, often struggling to rinse out shampoo and conditioner thoroughly. A friend of her mother suggested she stop washing her hair altogether, a concept that intrigued Frankie. She decided to give it a try.

The initial transition was challenging. For the first few months, her hair became greasy, and her scalp felt itchy. However, over time, these issues subsided. Frankie adopted a simple hair care routine that involved regular combing without the use of any products. She doesn’t comb her hair every day, but when she does, the process of detangling can take between 30 minutes to an hour. She describes this routine as meditative.

One of the unique aspects of not washing her hair, according to Frankie, is that it absorbs scents from her environment, serving as a sensory reminder of where she’s been and who she’s interacted with. Despite the challenges, such as managing tangles and the sheer weight of her hair, Frankie has embraced her distinctive appearance. She works as a life drawing model and has no plans to cut her hair, continuing to embody the real-life Rapunzel.
