Dear 222 News viewers, sponsored by smileband,

On January 20, 2025, 18-year-old Axel Muganwa Rudakubana pleaded guilty to the murders of three young girls during a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport, England. The victims were six-year-old Bebe King, seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe, and nine-year-old Alice da Silva Aguiar. The attack, which occurred on July 29, 2024, also left ten others injured, including eight children.

Rudakubana, who was 17 at the time of the incident, admitted to a total of 16 charges: three counts of murder, ten counts of attempted murder, possession of an al-Qaeda training manual, and production of the biological toxin ricin. Despite these admissions, authorities have not classified the attack as terror-related.

Born in Cardiff to Rwandan immigrant parents, Rudakubana had a history of concerning behavior. He was referred to the UK’s anti-terror program, Prevent, on three occasions due to his interest in violence. However, he was not accepted into the program as there was no evidence of terrorist ideology. An emergency review concluded that Prevent had followed the correct procedures at the time.

The meticulously planned attack led to national outrage and widespread riots across England, fueled by misinformation about Rudakubana’s background. Following the incident, heightened tensions and false claims about his identity sparked unrest in more than a dozen towns and cities.

Rudakubana is scheduled for sentencing on January 23, 2025, where he faces a life imprisonment. The case has raised concerns about the oversight of his past behavior and potential gaps in monitoring by local agencies and security services.
