The Palisades Fire, which ignited in Pacific Palisades, has rapidly spread to Malibu, causing widespread devastation in the region. As of January 8, 2025, the fire has scorched over 15,000 acres and remains uncontained, prompting the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents.

The blaze has destroyed more than 1,000 structures, including homes and local landmarks. Among the losses are two iconic Malibu restaurants, Reel Inn and Cholada Thai, both cherished establishments in the community.

The fire has also impacted several celebrities. Chef Sandra Lee’s Malibu home, which she described as a sanctuary during her “darkest moments,” has been destroyed. Kim Kardashian’s $70 million Malibu mansion is under threat as the flames approach properties along Pacific Coast Highway. Other notable figures, including Mark Hamill, Ben Affleck, and Jamie Lee Curtis, have evacuated their homes due to the advancing fire.

The situation is exacerbated by strong winds and dry conditions, which have hindered firefighting efforts. Authorities have expressed concerns that the worst may be yet to come, with forecasts predicting continued dry windstorms that could further spread the flames.

In addition to residential areas, the fire has affected cultural sites. The historic Getty Villa and the grounds of Pacific Palisades High School have caught fire; however, the museum’s collections are reported to be safe at this time.

The community has shown resilience amid the crisis, with many expressing gratitude toward the first responders battling the blaze. However, the path to recovery is expected to be long and challenging, as residents come to terms with the losses and begin the process of rebuilding.
