Nick Starmer, the younger brother of British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, passed away peacefully on Boxing Day, December 26, 2024, at the age of 60, following a prolonged battle with cancer.

Nick faced significant challenges throughout his life due to complications at birth that led to learning disabilities. Despite predictions that he would never learn to read, he defied expectations and developed reading skills. However, he left school without formal qualifications and found it difficult to maintain long-term employment, undertaking various jobs such as working on scrap cars and scaffolding.

In recent years, Nick’s health further declined due to a terminal lung cancer diagnosis. During this period, Sir Keir Starmer made private visits to his brother, balancing his political responsibilities with family commitments. These visits were kept confidential, reflecting the family’s desire for privacy during challenging times.

Sir Keir has often spoken about the deep sadness he feels regarding his brother’s difficult life, noting the stark contrast between their experiences. He recalled defending Nick from bullies during their school years and expressed profound gratitude to the medical professionals who cared for his brother during his illness.
