Burt, the renowned saltwater crocodile who gained fame for his role in the 1986 film Crocodile Dundee, passed away peacefully over the weekend of December 21–22, 2024, at Crocosaurus Cove in Darwin, Australia. Estimated to be over 90 years old, Burt’s passing marks the end of an incredible era.

Captured in the 1980s from the Reynolds River in Australia’s Northern Territory, Burt was named after actor Burt Reynolds. He became one of the most recognized crocodiles worldwide, notably appearing in Crocodile Dundee, where he featured in a scene rescuing the character Sue Charlton from an attack.

In 2008, Burt took up residence at Crocosaurus Cove, a reptile sanctuary in Darwin. Known for his independent nature and fiery temperament, he was a confirmed bachelor, an attitude he made clear during his earlier years at a crocodile farm. His commanding presence and impressive size—measuring over 5 meters in length and weighing approximately 700 kilograms—captivated visitors from around the globe.

Beyond his film career, Burt gained media attention in 2018 as the “Psychic Croc” for accurately predicting France’s victory over Croatia in the FIFA World Cup final by selecting a French flag over a Croatian one, both adorned with chicken wings. 

Crocosaurus Cove plans to honor Burt’s legacy with a commemorative plaque, celebrating his significant role in shaping Australia’s image as a land of rugged natural beauty and awe-inspiring wildlife. His life and contributions to wildlife education will be fondly remembered by both caretakers and visitors alike.
