Smileband News

Dear 222 News viewers, sponsored by smileband,

Russia recently imposed an unprecedented fine of 2 undecillion rubles ($2.5 decillion) on Google over YouTube’s blocking of 17 pro-Kremlin media channels, including RT and Channel One. The fine, which began accumulating in 2020 as daily penalties and doubled weekly, is now far beyond any feasible payment—exceeding the global GDP.

This move is largely symbolic, with the Kremlin aiming to pressure Google to restore the blocked channels rather than enforce the fine. Google’s Russian subsidiary filed for bankruptcy in 2022, limiting the fine’s practical implications.

Key Points on Russia’s Fine Against Google:

1. Massive Fine Amount: Russia imposed a record-breaking fine of 2 undecillion rubles ($2.5 decillion) on Google.

2. Basis for Fines: The fine relates to YouTube’s ongoing blocking of 17 pro-Kremlin media channels, including RT and Channel One.

3. Penalty Accumulation: Daily fines doubled weekly since 2020, resulting in an unpayable amount.

4. Symbolic Action: The Kremlin considers the fine symbolic, aiming to pressure Google rather than expecting actual payment.

5. Bankruptcy Filing: Google’s Russian subsidiary declared bankruptcy in 2022, limiting financial repercussions.

The main reason for Russia’s fine against Google is YouTube’s blocking of multiple pro-Kremlin media channels, such as RT and Channel One. Russian authorities view this as censorship of state-affiliated media, which support the Russian perspective on sensitive issues, including the conflict in Ukraine.

This fine is intended to pressure Google into restoring these channels and represents a broader tension between Russia’s control over information and international tech platforms’ policies.
